Instructions to learners

In this assignment you will address how ELC settings are required to support children’s rights.

In particular, you will demonstrate your understanding of children’s rights, legislation, regulations and frameworks in relation to your role as an ELC practitioner, and in relation to the obligations of an ELC service. You will be required to make reference to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and to the Child Care Act 1991 (Early Years Services) Regulations 2016.

Your assignment may take the following format:

Introduction

• Set out what you are going to do in the assignment.

Main Body (30 marks)

• Explain the concept of children’s rights and outline the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), its background and articles. (5 marks)
• Explore how Irish legislation and Irish social policy is influenced by the UNCRC and promotes the rights of the child. (5 marks)
• Give examples to back up your claim. (5 marks)
• Describe how the rights of families and children are promoted in an ELC setting. Give four examples and link your examples to Aistear and Síolta. (4 x 2.5 marks)
• Summarise the role of an ELC practitioner to ensure the rights of the child and promote an inclusive culture in the setting. (5 marks)
