Purpose
The purpose of this module is to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and competence to work independently in a supervisory capacity across various industries. During this module learners will gain a comprehensive understanding of supervisory management, including key responsibilities, adherence to policies, and maintaining industry standards. The module covers workplace supervision, staff conduct, and professional relationships, ensuring compliance with best practices. Upon completion, learners will be equipped with the competencies required to supervise, manage, and develop teams effectively, ensuring operational efficiency and staff well-being in various work environments.
Minimum Intended Module Learning Outcomes (MIMLOs)
- Describe the main duties and responsibilities of a supervisory manager referring to relevant policies and services in a chosen vocational or work environment.
- Examine how current industry standards, guidelines and practices influence the work environment, supervision, staff conduct and staff relations.
- Identify the steps required to effectively recruit staff, including pre-planning, sourcing, screening and evaluating methods.
- Develop procedures for work-related activities, including communication, service standards, staff recruitment and criteria for supervisory procedures.
- Prepare a system for maintaining work-related records and a budget to include planned and contingency spending.
- Apply effective training methods to train staff under the current industry standards using suitable aids and materials during a training session.
- Develop staff evaluations that measure objectives, provide feedback, and identify person development opportunities.
The Assessment Format and Guidelines for Submission
Format: This project requires learners to demonstrate their understanding of supervisory management through the application of key concepts to a chosen healthcare workplace scenario. Learners must produce a structured written report that addresses the core responsibilities of a supervisory manager, including compliance with organisational policies, industry standards, staff recruitment, workplace procedures, financial management, staff training, and performance evaluation processes.
Word count for the written report is: 1500 words (excluding references).
In addition to the written report, learners are required to submit three short video recordings (maximum 7 minutes each). These videos are designed to assess the learner’s ability to explain, apply, and justify key decisions in a real or realistic workplace context. The video component should demonstrate clear understanding, practical application, and the learner’s own voice and reasoning, rather than repeating the written content.
Learners must also submit practical supporting artefacts as part of their project. These include:
- A sample budget, demonstrating financial planning and contingency considerations
- A staff evaluation form, designed to support performance management and staff development
These artefacts must be clearly linked to the chosen organisation or scenario and referenced within the main body of the report and included in the Appendices. The sample budget form is Appendix 1. The staff evaluation form is Appendix 2.
All work must be appropriately referenced using the Harvard Referencing system.
Learners should refer to the Harvard Referencing Guidelines available in the Student Success module on Moodle for guidance on the correct use of in-text citations and the compilation of a bibliography.
Each submission must include:
- A cover page
- A signed authorship statement
- A table of contents
- The main body of work
- A reference list (bibliography)
- Appendices (including the required artefacts)
- The Video submissions uploaded to Moodle
The report should be presented using either Times New Roman or Arial font, size 12, with
1.5 line spacing. This assessment is designed to meet the following learning outcomes: MIMLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
All components of the project, including the written report, video submissions, and supporting artefacts, must be uploaded to Moodle.
Further information regarding the Video submission expectations and professionalism requirements will be uploading to Moodle within the assignment section.
