Details:
This assignment has two main parts.
1. Definition: First, in 1-2 paragraphs you will carefully define the population chosen for your paper. See specifics below for what to include and what to avoid.
2. Annotations: Second, you will create an annotated bibliography, listing the citation in APA format for each of four articles. Beneath each citation, in bullet format, summarize and synthesize the 3-4 items requested below from the article – brevity and clarity is key here as I’m asking you usually to do the work of distilling info simply and clearly. See specific details below
DEFINITION:
In 1 -2 paragraphs, citing at least 2 articles or reports you have reviewed, define your population (e.g., first generation college students, LGBT students, nontraditional students, veterans, Latino/Latina students, African American male students).
First, specifically cite the research showing how scholars and/or perhaps governmental agencies/policies define the population (i.e., move beyond defining just by intuition). You might consider these questions: How does the current research define your population? What are the debates in how the population is defined? Consider especially nuances that may exist in your population, for example if examining a racial
population, consider ways international students of that race impact your definition or if examining veterans, consider differing ways of defining the population, from the legal definition of veteran or to other definitions that also include active-duty service members.
Second, describe trends you have found related to the populations’ college attendance, graduation rates, and/or demographics. For example, you might examine who are the students in this population demographically? Are there common characteristics for the students as they enter college (e.g. X% of those in this population attend college or over XX% of college students are from the population)? What do we know about the student group empirically as they enter/choose college?
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
The purpose of this bibliography is to require your careful review of contemporary (within the last 20 years), peer-reviewed articles that will contribute to your writing/thinking in your final research paper. After conducting research, you select four of the best or most fitting articles for your population and area of interest. Read articles thoroughly and create this annotated bibliography. Please note news articles and dissertations are not peer-reviewed articles; while they may be excellent supplementary articles, they do not count toward the required four articles for this paper (or for 8 required in the final). This bibliography should include the following
•Correct, APA-formatted citations for four peer-reviewed research articles published since 2005 related to your population (if they don’t exist, you’ll want to ask me and the library for help at least two weeks before the assignment. If they still don’t exist, then we’ll assess whether you need a new topic).
•For each article, include in your own words (use very few quotes) the following key features:
• The main purpose of the research/article – no more than 2 sentences
•The research methods and sample (quantitative? Qualitative? Large sample across many institutions? Small sample of a few people at one institution?) – no more than 2 sentences
• Key findings (what exactly did the research find?) – no more than 4 sentences
•Optional: Your evaluation: No more than 3 sentences on the strengths and weaknesses of the article and how you would hope to use it in compiling your final paper.
This bibliography will likely be no more than 3 pages, and shorter is often better as succinct reviews showcase clear focus on key ideas. An example is here: https://davenport.libguides.com/apa/annotated (https://davenport.libguides.com/apa/annotated)
