Introduction

Throughout your module, you will be provided with opportunities to practise, analyse and reflect upon your development of the practical legal skills that the Solicitors Regulation Authority (the SRA) will assess in Stage 2 of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE). Those skills are separated into the following oral skills and written skills:

Ref. – Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate:

K2- A comprehensive and systematic knowledge and conceptual understanding of the methodologies underpinning the practical application of legal skills and attributes that are relevant to contemporary legal and professional practice.

Professional Skills and Attitudes

Ref. – Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

Act autonomously to plan, manage and progress professional or legal tasks,
identifying matters requiring further inquiry or supervision and exercising appropriate professional judgement to resolve relevant ethical or regulatory issues.

Reflective Statement

Your reflective statement should focus on the development of your professional competence in the practical legal skills that form the basis of the SRA’s skills assessments in the SQE. Those skills are comprised as follows:

Assessment criteria

Candidates will be assessed against the following criteria:

Apply the law correctly to the client’s situation.

Assessment objective

Candidates can demonstrate they are able to produce a written report to a partner giving a legal analysis of the case and client-focused advice.

Assessment criteria

Candidates will be assessed against the following criteria:
Identify relevant facts.

Provide client-focused advice (i.e. advice which demonstrates an understanding of the problem from the client’s point of view and what the client wants to achieve, not just from a legal perspective).
Use clear, precise, concise and acceptable language.
Application of law.
Apply the law correctly to the client’s situation.
Apply the law comprehensively to the client’s situation, identifying any ethical and professional conduct issues and exercising judgment to resolve them honestly and with integrity.
