  • Operational and financial challenges, including issues with liquidity, debt repayments or how to develop “smart CapEx” on assets to maintain tariffs and/or competitive advantage.
  • Uncertainty about the timing and speed of the recovery depending on the arrival of treatments for the virus in order to return to “normal”

However, throughout the pandemic businesses have proven to be incredibly resilient. They have adapted their operations accordingly and innovatively introduced new ways of generating revenue –from providing takeaway meals and Home Food Kits to embracing new technology and maximising the use of outdoor space. This adaptability offers a blueprint for the future and gives hope that the businesses that have survived during the pandemic, and those that follow, will emerge stronger than before.

As service businesses face a fine balancing act of trying to get back to normal working practices while continuing to innovate and diversify, leaders and managers are key to ensuring that they have the right people in the right places, with the right skills. They need to be able to manage continued employee fatigue and burn out, facilitate remote working, and engage with employees in a meaningful way to support wellbeing.

Scenario

You are working as an HR Assistant for the Head of HR in your selected public sector organisation or London’s Community Kitchen. Make sure you get approval for your selected organisation from your tutor. The Head of HR has asked you to submit a research-based report which can be passed to the senior management team for consideration. The assignment must address all learning outcomes and be contextualised through investigation and research into your selected public sector organisation.

Conduct a review of the literature on leadership and management that is relevant to your selected organisation and the topic of your assignment and include the following:

  • Give an analysis of classical management theories and an evaluation of different styles and structures of leadership and management that are relevant to your selected organisation, and the way that the organisation deals with labour shortages affecting the whole hospitality sector.

Format

The required submission is in the form of a research-based literature review. It must be word-processed, written work with clear indication of the unit number and title, the relevant task being addressed, your name and registration number. This should be written in a concise, formal business style using single spacing and font size 12. You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs and subheadings as appropriate. These may be included in the main body or in the appendices, but you must provide a written explanation of them in the main body. Any sources you draw information from should be referenced using the Harvard referencing system. The recommended word limit is 1500 to 2000 words excluding appendices.

Scenario

Once you have submitted your literature review, the Head of HR would like you to give a ppt presentation to the senior management team in your organisation. In your presentation, you need to make informed recommendations on what you believe the organisation needs to do in order to upskill its management and leadership team, so they are able to respond more effectively to post-pandemic labour shortages.

You will need to include the following:

  1. Evaluate what relevant ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ management and leadership skills the organisation currently has and what improvements it may require in order to meet labour shortage challenges in the
  2. Compare how your selected organisation has managed to cope with changes that have occurred due to post-pandemic labour shortages, with another similar organisation in the hospitality service industry. Identify the similarities and differences between the way the two organisations responded to challenges.
  3. Analyse how their respective management and leadership skills and styles adapted to challenges related to labour shortages.
  4. Provide critical evaluation of how the organisation has already developed management and leadership skills to cope with changes due to post-pandemic labour shortages, and what further skills it needs to develop.

The submission is in the form of a 5-10-minute individual PowerPoint presentation with some additional time (approximately 5 minutes) allocated for questions. The presentation slides and speaker notes should be submitted as one document. You are required to make effective use of power-point headings, bullet points and subsections as appropriate. Your research should be referenced using the Harvard referencing system. Please also provide a list of references at the end using the Harvard referencing system.
