ELX304 Assignment Brief

This assignment is weighted at 50% of the overall module.

Submission Deadline: 11 Sep 2026 23:59

All work is to be completed individually, except where explicitly stated, and you will only be able to receive Marks for your own work. You are responsible for the security and integrity of your own files, and you must not permit others access to your assignment work. Plagiarism or paraphrasing without due accreditation will be dealt with severely as set out in the University Infringement of Assessment Regulations and detailed in the Programme Handbook. You can also refer to the library guidebook on plagiarism, such as Avoiding Plagiarism – University Library Services (sunderland.ac.uk). Students are permitted to use AI tools in an assistive role within the assessment. However, the student must declare in the submission the tool(s) used and how they used them.

You must complete the Assignment Declaration questionnaires. Otherwise, the submission will not be considered.

However, students cannot use AI tools to do the project for them, as the work must be completely done by the students. All AI-generated content must be validated by the student. You are expected to upload your work; submitting links to files saved elsewhere in the cloud will not be considered and will result in a zero mark. The actual files must be loaded to Canvas and readily available to the assessor. After uploading and submitting your files, you must check that you can also retrieve and open them. It is your responsibility to ensure files are not corrupted at the time of submission and to report any issues immediately to the help desk, copying in your lecturer and seeking alternative arrangements when required.

Q1 Figure Q1 shows the state flow diagram of a sequential system:

a) Construct its state output table.

(3 marks)

b) Develop a minimised state output table.

If merges are possible, then replace the higher alphabetically ordered states that you have merged, i.e. if A merges with then replace B with A.

(4 marks)

c) For the minimised system, identify all the state assignment rules and confirm which rules are not satisfied by the following state assignment:

State ABCDEFG
Q1Q2Q3000001011010111110101

You may ignore any states lost during the minimisation process.

(6 marks)

d) Use the above assignment to develop a JK-type flip-flop solution to your design for Q1b. You need not sketch the final design.

(8 marks)

e) Describe the operation the circuit performs
Hint: This may be more obvious from your minimised systems flow diagram.

(4 marks)

Q2 Two switches, A and B, are used to control the operation of an asynchronous system with the output Z as shown in Figure Q2.
A minimal Asynchronous solution to the above problem is to be designed (noting that all the states shown above are stable for all input conditions that enter into them) :

a) Obtain its State output table. You may assume that outputs need only be assigned to stable states and that simultaneous changes in input cannot occur.

(4 marks)

b) Develop a merger diagram and identify that merger sets {a,b,d}, {c,f}, {e,g} and {h} are a valid solution to the problem.

(6 marks)

c) Hence show that the merges in b) above, labelling the merged sets 1 – 4 respectively, can produce a race-free solution using two feedback.

(5 marks)

d) Using your feedback assignments from c) above, develop a logical expression for the output which avoids any unwanted output transitions. You need not design the feedback.

(6 marks)

e) From this design, the minimal number of states possible uses the groupings {a,b,d}, {c,e,f} and {g,h}. Unfortunately, when assigning the state feedback, it is only possible to produce a non-critical race solution. What is a non-critical race, and what issues must be avoided if this is to lead to a successful design

(4 marks)
