Assessment of Learning: Teacher-marked
Trends in the business of hockey
You are halfway through this course. This is an Assessment of Learning, which is used to evaluate your work based on established criteria and to assign a mark. Your teacher will provide you with feedback and a mark. This Assessment of Learning is worth 17% of your final mark for the course.
There are three tasks in this Assessment of Learning.
Now that you have a general understanding of the current trends affecting today’s international businesses, it is time for you to once again help the team at Blue Line Hockey Sticks.
Dap and Katelyn recently reviewed a 2015 Sportsnet report that stated hockey was an $11 billion business in Canada. They identified the following trends.
Demographically
Socially
Economically
Technologically
Demographically, 90% of Canadians believe that hockey is embedded in our cultural identity. About 68% of new Canadians become hockey fans after their first five years in Canada. This number rises to 80% after 10 years, spanning across the young and old alike! There is even an online MBA program offered by Athabasca University in Alberta that focuses exclusively on the business of hockey.
Seeing the ever-growing interest in and excitement about hockey here in Canada, Dap and Katelyn are looking for your expertise to identify the demographic, social, economic, and technological trends for the country that you chose in Learning activity 1.5. Once you have identified these trends, you will analyze and assess how they might affect Blue Line Hockey Sticks. Finally, you will write a report providing Dap and Katelyn with recommendations on how to take advantage of potential opportunities.
You must complete three tasks to be successful in this activity. Be sure to read all tasks in their entirety before starting. You will be submitting work for all three tasks.
Tasks
Task 1: Prep work – research outline
Use the “Assessment for Learning Activity 2.5 Task 1 Research Outline
(Opens in new window)
” to complete the following:
1. Conduct research on the demographic, social, economic, and technological trends for your chosen country. Determine how they may affect Blue Line Hockey Sticks. Be sure to keep track of your sources as you will need them for your citations and reference list in the upcoming tasks.
2. When you are comfortable with your research, provide a summary of what you have learned in the box provided.
3. Come up with some initial recommendations for Dap and Katelyn based on these research findings.
Save the finished document. You will submit it for evaluation when you have completed all tasks
Task 2: Prep work – report outline
Now that you have completed your research outline, it’s time to organize the sections of your report. Use the “Assessment for Learning Activity 2.5 Task 2 Report Outline
(Opens in new window)
” to help you.
You may wish to have a friend or family member review the outline with you so that you get feedback before committing to the final product.
Save the finished document. You will submit it for evaluation when you have completed all tasks.
Task 3: Final product – trend report
Write your trend report in a .doc or .docx format using word-processing software. Your trend report draws from the work you completed in your research and report outlines from Tasks 1 and 2.
Trend report guidelines:
● Length: at least 500 words per trend category.
● A title is required.
● A table of contents is required.
● An introduction is required.
● Use headings, pagination, and transitions throughout.
● APA in-text citations and a References list are required.

Remember that your role is to advise Dap and Katelyn about the demographic, social, economic, and technological trends for your chosen country, how these trends affect Blue Line Hockey Sticks, and how the company can take advantage of these opportunities.
As a wise sage once said, “If you fail to plan, you are essentially planning to fail.” Therefore, you must complete and submit both outlines (i.e., Task 1 and Task 2) along with your final trend report.
Revise your work for spelling and grammar (use tools like Grammarly and spell check, as applicable).
Feedback and marking
You will receive three kinds of feedback:
● Your teacher will highlight the phrases on the rubric that best describe your assignment to show you how you have done.
● Your teacher will also provide you with detailed comments about the strengths of your assignment, the areas of the assignment that need improvement, and the steps you should take before submitting another assignment like this one.
The final piece of feedback that you will receive will be your mark. Each of the four categories of knowledge and skills is weighted equally at 25 marks, making a total of 100 marks. The final mark on this Assessment of Learning is determined by your teacher based on their professional judgement of the requirements for the assignment.
Rubric
Pay careful attention to the following rubric. Your teacher will use it to assess your work. You should refer to it too, so you’ll know exactly what your finished assignment should look like.
