Q2 (cmithcell)

In the Homeland Security field, one aspect of analysis involves conducting security assessments on behalf of government agencies and private companies.

An important component of a security assessment involves qualitative documentation. This is a simple concept but can be very effective for conveying the extent to which a vulnerability exists for an organization. One form of qualitative documentation is first-hand, photographic documentation.

This week’s graded discussion involves two steps:

First, go out into your community and take at least three pictures of a Transportation-related security issue that corresponds with the one of the Chapter 9 areas (highway, railroad, subway, maritime, airport, etc.). If the location has one, provide the name of the place you are writing about. Give the physical location and provide its address. If the address isn’t apparent, write directions on how to reach the area you are writing about.

Second, type your observations and share them

Q3

1. Artifact: Provide a concise summary of the news article, focusing on the racial disparities highlighted, any statistical data provided, and the specific examples or cases discussed.

2. Think: Critically evaluate the article’s perspective and its implications for the justice system.  Consider at least one of the following:

  • Racial Threat Hypothesis: Does the article reflect the theory that as minority populations grow, policies become stricter, leading to higher incarceration rates among people of color?
  • Disparity vs. Discrimination: Does the article discuss or imply whether the disparities are due to systemic discrimination or other factors, such as different rates of offending or higher policing in certain communities?
  • Incarceration Rates: How does the article’s portrayal of incarceration rates compare to the statistics and trends discussed in the chapter?
  • Consequences: Does the article touch on the social and political impacts of these disparities, such as disenfranchisement or community disruption?

3. Opinion:  Do you believe that the reasons presented for racial disparities in corrections are valid or supported by the chapter’s material? What reforms, if any, do you think could address these disparities? Reflect on whether understanding the historical context of policies, like the War on Drugs, changes your perception of current disparities.

The Culinary Institute of America reading discusses the use of material that has been trimmed from the ingredient. For your discussion here, provide an example of what usable trim is and how it might be used.

The segment is located in chapter 2 under “recipe calculations”.

To start, identify an ingredient you may use [preferably related to the recipe you presented in week 1]. Then, provide an estimated cost for purchasing that ingredient as well as an estimated yield percentage and waste [trim]. Estimates can be found online or you can measure your own usage for a recipe at home. Following that and for the focus of the discussion, determine an alternative use for the trim and evaluate the value of the usable “waste” or trim for that alternative usage.

Q12

1) Discuss in detail how computer databases and information networks may be useful in criminal investigations.

#1 How to Record and Embed a Video in the classroom#2 How To Upload and Embed a previously recorded video

  1. Film yourself teaching this lesson to your athletes. They do not have to be present, you can teach to the camera. Be creative.
  2. The video should be between 2-5 minutes in length. (Gather several takes, and select the best one).
  3. Embed your video into the discussion board.

Q14

A town official claims that the average vehicle in their area sells for more than the 40th percentile of your data set. Using the data, you obtained in week 1, as well as the summary statistics you found for the original data set (excluding the super car outlier), run a hypothesis test to determine if the claim can be supported.  Make sure you state all the important values, so your fellow classmates can use them to run a hypothesis test as well.  Use the descriptive statistics you found during Week 2 NOT the new SD you found during Week 4.  Because again, we are using the original 10 sample data set NOT a new smaller sample size.  Use alpha = .05 to test your claim.

(Note: You will want to use the function =PERCENTILE.INC  in Excel to find the 40th percentile of your data set.  Hopefully this Excel function looks familiar to you from Week 2.)

First determine if you are using a z or t-test and explain why. Then conduct a four-step hypothesis test including a sentence at the end justifying the support or lack of support for the claim and why you made that choice.

I encourage you to review the Week 6 Hypothesis Testing PDF at the bottom of the discussion.  This will give you a step by step example on how to calculate and run a hypothesis test using Excel. I DO NOT recommend doing this by hand.  Let Excel do the heavy lifting for you.  You can also use this PDF in Quizzes section.

There were 5 additional PDFs that were created to help you with the Homework, Lessons and Tests in Quizzes section.  While they won’t be used to answer the questions in the discussion, they are just as useful and beneficial.  I encourage you to review these ASAP!  These PDFs are also located at the bottom of the discussion.

Once you have posted your initial discussion, you must reply to at least two other learner’s post. Each post must be a different topic. So, you will have your initial post from one topic, your first follow-up post from a different topic, and your second follow-up post from one of the other topics. Of course, you are more than welcome to respond to more than two learners.”

Instructions: Make sure you include your data set in your initial post as well.  You must also respond to at least 2 other students. Responses may include direct questions.

In your first peer response post, look at the hypothesis test results of one of your classmates and explain what a type 1 error would mean in a practical sense. Looking at your classmate’s outcome, is a type 1 error likely or not? What specific values indicated this?

In your second peer response post, using your classmate’s values, run another hypothesis test using this scenario:  A town official claims that the average vehicle in their area Does Not sell for 80th percentile of your data set.  Conduct a four-step hypothesis test including a sentence at the end justifying the support or lack of support for the claim and why you made that choice.  Note: this test will be different than the initial post, starting with the hypothesis scenario. Use alpha = .05 to test your claim.

Q18

1.  Briefly summarize the Kansas City Preventive Patrol Experiment. Are the implications of the results still current today?  Should they be relied on to make patrol allocation and distribution decisions in modern cities and communities?  Why or why not?  Fully explain your position.

The complete study may be found here but should not be used as one of your references.

2.  In 1982, Kelling and Wilson proposed the famous “Broken Windows” theory that resulted in many changes in police patrol emphasis.  Recent studies have resulted in some professional disagreement with the original theory.  Again, using recent academic references, briefly discuss the theory and whether you believe it should be considered valid for police resource utilization.

Q19

Data integration can be a very complex process as it involves the communication of various technologies, platforms, and networks. This complexity is amplified in organizations that handle sensitive or personal information, such as healthcare. In your discussion post, explain the significance of data integration and its role as a critical element in data analytics. Provide an example to support your thoughts.
