IEP PROJECT: IEP GOALS ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
A central component of an IEP is the measurable annual goals which describe the student’s
target achievements or the intended outcomes of instruction. IEP goals are developed and based
on the student’s current levels of academic and functional performance and are aligned with the
state’s learning standards. For this assignment, you will apply your goal writing skills in a
student case study.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. After reviewing the course’s textbook reading assignments and presentations on writing
IEP goals and objectives, read the Present Level of Academic Achievement and
Functional Performance (PLAAFP) for Elli Smith document provided with this
assignment.
2. Using the provided IEP Project: IEP Goals Template, write three standards-based goals
specific to reading and decoding.
a. The goals you write must align with Virginia Standards of Learning. Refer to the
English Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools (SOLs 2.5–2.10); a
link to these standards has been provided with this assignment.
b. Assume the goals you are writing are for the Annual Review occurring at the
beginning of Elli’s second-grade year.
c. When writing goals, be sure the following elements exist in the goal statement:
i. The student’s name
ii. Specification that the goal is annual
iii. The grade level of the words, reading passage, assessment, etc.
iv. The percentage of accuracy to be obtained
v. The number of trials allowed for the goal to be met
d. For each goal statement, provide the related Virginia Standard(s) of Learning
(SOL).
e. For each goal statement, indicate on the provided checklist how the student’s
progress towards the goal will be measured.
Your goals should be written professionally with correct spelling and grammar.
