Library Assignment/Special Needs Presentation
Rationale: The dental hygienist must be competent to treat all
patients, especially those with special needs. Special needs
patients consist of those patients diagnosed with a
medical/behavioral/psychological/developmental condition what
will affect the patient’s systemic and oral health. These special
needs conditions affect the dental hygiene services that are
employed and patient education/oral hygiene instructions that
are provided.
Each student will be assigned a different medical
condition/disease/disorder to research and develop a research
paper. Each student will also develop a short presentation to be
shared with classmates.
General Directions for research paper:
1. Must be 3-5 pages, double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pt.
Times New Roman font
2. Must be college level writing required for English 101 and
proper APA format with title page. (Refer to the APA
Publication Manual, 6* edition for proper APA format of
paper, in-text citations, and references. Another good
source is Purdue Writing Lab

3. Must include a minimum of 3 references (scholarly, peer-
reviewed journals or texts)
a. Must be available in BCCC Library, on-site
periodicals and books and electronic databases (or
both)|
b. Must be current (within 5 years)
4. Paper should include:
a. Title Page (APA format)
b. Introduction
c. Body (Refer to Grade Sheet for Specific Content) |
d. Conclusion
e. Reference Page
5. Electronic copy must be submitted to Turnitin by deadline.

General Directions for Peer Presentation:
1. Give a 10-minute oral presentation to classmates on the
assigned special need
2. Have a professional appearance during the presentation
3. Speak loud and clearly, and demonstrate mastery of the
