MED_6_MSM Manufacturing Systems and Materials Technologies Coursework 2 Assignment
Question:
Solid steel rods with a hardness of 65 HRC are available in lengths greater than 290 mm and diameters greater than 32 mm. A test pair assembly consisting of a valve and a sleeve is to be manufactured under strict tolerancing requirements, as specified in the relevant sections of the PDF drawings, also shown in Part 1 and Part 3 below, just for reference. Please refer to the original PDF drawings for all detailed dimensions and tolerances. The images shown below are provided only to improve visibility and are not drawn to scale.
Part 1 (Valve):

Part 3 (Sleeve):

Develop a rationale for the selection of a suitable manufacturing protocol for the fabrication of this component in a time-efficient manner, with full justification of the choice of the machining process, guidelines on the machine to be used, as well as a discussion on fixturing and tooling choices, keeping in view the strict tolerancing requirement in cylindricity.
Mark(s) breakdown:
Rigour for selection of manufacturing technologies with supporting evidence from literature, including an explanation of the proposed justification of the machine tool, cutting tools, and fixtures to be used (indicative diagram suggested): (60 marks)
Critical information on process parameters, machining time, and level of finish and tolerances expected (30 marks)
Identify a practical application for the assembly and suggest an estimated cost for producing per assembly pair
(10 marks)
The marks awarded will be based on the following rubric:
Rigour for selection of manufacturing method with evidence: (30 marks)
Choice of cutting tools: (15 marks)
Choice of fixtures to be used: (15 marks)
Critique on the Process parameters: (10 marks)
Details on the calculation of the loading, machining and unloading time: (10 marks)
Commentary on the level of finish and tolerance expected: (10 marks)
State at least two practical applications of such a sleeve-valve assembly: (10 marks)
Important aspects about this manufacturing coursework 2 (CW2):
- This individual coursework is being released on 19th March 2026.
- The submission deadline is 30th April 2026 through the dedicated VLE link.
- All submissions need to be individual, and your work will be checked against plagiarism, and penalties will be imposed for information duplicity.
- Please make proper references along with the related section/subsection of that reference for each of your statements or arguments. For instance, conventionally, liquid lubricants such as water and kerosene are used in machining processes of metals [12: subsection 2.1].
Therefore, you will necessarily need to include your reference list at the end of the report. Coursework received with flawed citations/references in their formatting will be penalised with 10 marks. - This Coursework carries 50% weight in the assessment of the module.
- There is no limit on the number of words, but it’s best to be focused and objective in your answers.
- All questions are mandatory to be answered.
- In preparing this CW2, please feel free to use as many labelled, scaled and well-illustrative diagrams possible
