Module 2: Workflow Design & Process Mapping
Healthcare technology surrounds and supports the delivery of care, and tools are available to analyze and improve processes. Informatics assists strategic planning and the measurement of care through patient outcomes. Technology and informatics together are essential when we look at clinical performance and plan change to support the patient experience.
Changing a process to improve patient outcomes includes analyzing the current workflow design and mapping a new process. Workflow design and process maps provide a framework to guide change. A Process Map can serve as a framework for change, illustrating the stakeholders involved and the decision-making and consequences of those decision points. Models like Lean and Six Sigma use concepts to improve processes and target improvement in patient outcomes. Baseline data compared to data post-workflow redesign reveals the impact of the implemented change.
Assignment Description:
Workflow Redesign and Process Map Presentation
Based on what you have learned so far in this course, create a PowerPoint presentation that addresses each of the following points. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. Use clear headings that allow your professor to know which bullet you are addressing on the slides in your presentation. Support your content with at least five (5) sources throughout your presentation. Make sure to reference the citations using the APA writing style for the presentation. Include a slide for your references at the end. Follow best practices for PowerPoint presentations related to text size, color, images, effects, wordiness, and multimedia enhancements. Review the rubric criteria for this assignment.
Choose a clinical quality issue that requires a change to improve clinical outcomes. Examples may include (but are not limited to):
· infection prevention,
· injury prevention,
· skin integrity,
· discharge planning, and
· patient handoff.
Create your Module 2 Workflow Redesign and Process Map Assignment PowerPoint Presentation containing the following information:
- Introduce the clinical issue including its importance to patient outcomes.
- Describe the current workflow.
- Create a Swim-Lane Workflow Design that illustrates the current process.
- Apply concepts from the Lean philosophy to propose an improved workflow design.
- Develop two to three measurable outcomes that would use data to determine if the new workflow was successful.
- Create a Process Map to illustrate the change to improve patient outcomes. Incorporate the use of data in the Process Map to measure patient outcomes impacted by the change in workflow.
Summarize the Workflow Design and Process Map on a concluding slide.
