In this final-year adult nursing assessment, students present a proposal for a practice change in their field that improves patient safety and reduces clinical risk. Speaking as a newly qualified nurse (NQN) and emergent leader, they rationalise the need for the change, explain how they would lead its implementation, and critically reflect on their own personal and professional skills and knowledge.
Assessment Task
Present individually on a proposed practice change you would implement in the role of a newly qualified registered nurse rather than a student nurse. Keep confidentiality by not naming trusts, specific areas or people; refer to an area simply as, for example, a surgical ward, forensic ward, GP practice or community setting. Begin your presentation with the statement:
“In my role as a newly qualified nurse and emergent leader, I will foster a culture of excellence by addressing the need for [chosen outcome from an NMC platform] by implementing [chosen proposed practice change].”
The Proposed Practice Change
Critically examine a proposed practice change of your choice that improves an element of nursing practice and supports your professional development in leadership and in sustaining a positive culture of care. Consider it alongside your module research, taught content and clinical experience. The change must align with ONE outcome from ONE platform of the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (2018):
- Platform 1: Being an accountable professional
- Platform 2: Promoting health and preventing ill health
- Platform 3: Assessing needs and planning care
- Platform 4: Providing and evaluating care
- Platform 5: Leading and managing nursing care and working in teams
- Platform 6: Improving safety and quality of care
- Platform 7: Coordinating care
Things to Include in the Presentation
- Clearly state your proposed practice change, a service development directed towards improved outcomes for service users, families, visitors or colleagues.
- Justify the reasons behind your choice of proposed practice change with appropriate evidence, such as research, policy and values.
- Justify the leadership style you would use to facilitate the proposed practice change.
- Critically reflect on your strengths and weaknesses as an emergent leader in implementing the change, and identify a personal development need.
- Evaluate your interpersonal skills in relation to how you would supervise others and contribute to their learning and assessment within the area of the change.
- Discuss your personal and professional accountability in relation to implementing the change.
- Respond to two questions about your proposed change, leadership strategy and use of literature (not marked, but they can support your grade positively).
- Present within the time allocated: 13 to 15 minutes, with 15 minutes the maximum (an additional 25%, about 19 minutes, for students with a Disability Support Summary).
Submission and Support
You do not need to submit the presentation or script to Moodle beforehand; share your PowerPoint on the day and have a working microphone. Assessment support runs through the module, with a dedicated assessment brief session, weekly tutorials and Q&A sessions. The brief sets out the module rules on the use of artificial intelligence in the assessment.
