Project Title: Discuss the role of the specialist nurse and the principles of providing nursing care in a selected specialist patient group.

Word Count : 1500 words +/- 10% (excluding references)

This assessment supports you to achieve the following module learning outcomes:

1. Research the principles of nursing care for specialist patient groups (e.g. children and expectant mothers).
2. Articulate the role of the general nurse in providing care for specialist patient groups.
3. Reflect on how these care needs can be met in the general healthcare setting

Aim of Assignment

The aim of this project is to demonstrate an understanding of the role of the specialist nurse and the principles of providing nursing care for selected specialist patient groups by the general nurse.

Part A: Group Project – Oral Presentation 40%

The oral presentation will be completed as part of a group. The presentation should demonstrate input from all members of the group and should be supported by a PowerPoint presentation or other approved format.

Groups must choose two topics from the core nursing specialism below:

1. Mental Health
2. Emergency Department
3. Paediatrics
4. Maternity

The discussion in the presentation must include:

• The principles of nursing care
• The role of the general nurse in supporting patients in selected specialist groups
• Commonalities and differences of nursing caring required by different specialist groups

You must upload the PowerPoint presentation to the assessment submission portal with your written assignment.

Part B: Individual Written Assignment 60%

From your group work in your presentation choose your preferred speciality to discuss in your written assignment. For your discussion layout your essay under the following headings.

Introduction and Discussion (60 marks)

• Principles of nursing care
• Commonalities and differences of nursing caring and the role of the general nurse in providing nursing care for this specialist patient group.

Reflection (40 marks)

Reflect on how your individual experiences during clinical placement will influence your practice in caring for patients as a general nurse.
