I am currently studying a Master’s degree in Education at Birmingham City University. As part of my final dissertation, I will be undertaking some practice-based research. Participation in this research is voluntary and you have the right to withdraw at any time without penalty. The purpose of this participant information letter is to inform you about the research study so that you can decide whether you wish to participate in the research. You have been invited to participate in this research study as you have knowledge that will enable me to collect relevant data for the research topic and you work within the appropriate educational institution, in this case a primary or secondary school.

You have up until (insert number of weeks) weeks after the data collection process to withdraw your data, after which it will be impossible to remove the data from the analysis. Should you be selected to be interviewed during this research study, interviews will be recorded using an electronic device such as a smart phone or iPad, solely for the purpose of transcribing the interview, you will be offered the opportunity to see the transcript before the data is analysed.
All data gathered as part of this research study will be kept confidential and will be held securely in line with data protection guidelines as per the Data Protection Act (2018) guidance. All results will be reported in an aggregated and anonymised form unless explicitly agreed otherwise. Confidentiality arrangements will be considered at all stages of the study from collection of data, storage of data, analysis, interpretation and writing up the dissertation. In line with GDPR (2018) compliance, all data will be stored securely using password protected means for the duration of the research study by the researcher, all data will be permanently deleted on successful award of the MA qualification.
The results of this study will be used for scholarly purposes only and will be shared with Birmingham City University academic staff for assessment purposes. This research has also been granted ethical approval by Birmingham City University’s, Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences, Faculty Academic Ethics Committee.

There are potential benefits in taking part in this research study, for example, the ability to influence policy or practice change, create greater understanding or altruistic reasons. There will be no financial payments to reimburse participants for time given as there are mitigations in place to ensure this is a benefit, not an attempt at coercion, and participants are free to decline participation or withdraw from the research.
You also need to be aware that there could be potential risks by taking part in this research study, based on aspects of your own beliefs, values, views and perspectives in education and the workplace, from a practical, emotional, physical and psychological perspective.
