After reading the module, studying the references, and analyzing the following case study, each student will draft a token economy program to establish the objective behavior, conduct a behavioral analysis, and propose details for integrating reinforcement.
· Hypothetical Case: Ana is a 12-year-old girl with an older and a younger sister. Before the birth of her younger sister, Ana was an outgoing and initiative-taking child. She loved using video game consoles, had good grades, and was on the honor roll. She assisted with household chores and engaged in conversations with her parents and older sister, who were always willing to listen.
· Ana underwent a transformation when Andrea, the younger sister, was born. Initially, she exhibited disruptive behaviors such as yelling, slamming doors and refusing to do her tasks. The more significant the problems in the household became, the more indulgent the parents became. They took her on several trips, and the more they indulged her whims, the more rebellious she became. She would make derogatory remarks about the baby whenever Ana saw her sister receiving gifts. Her loving parents gave her more time to play video games to calm her. If she witnessed assistance being given to the baby, she would throw herself to the floor, cry, and ask for help to get up. Concerned, her parents took her to the pediatrician to rule out any illness. Once, at an amusement park, Ana got angry because she hadn’t bought a stuffed animal. She threw herself to the ground, screamed, and cried until her mom, to stop the situation, agreed to buy her an even larger stuffed animal than the original.
· After many attempts to increasingly please her, the parents became frustrated and started punishing her. Every time Ana exhibited unwanted behavior, her parents yelled at her and sent her to her room. Ana became increasingly angry each day. She stopped talking to anyone, lost grades, and didn’t want to play or share with her friends.
· Now, the parents seek psychotherapy, worried because Ana is “not the same as before.”
· Remember that it is crucial that, during the formulation of the token economy program, you answer the question:
· How is a token economy effective for addressing behaviors such as aggression or a lack of boundaries?
