Write, at minimum, a 500-word post addressing at least one of the following leading questions for this week's module. Meaningful and substantive contributions will require 1.) that you carefully read (and reflect on) the material, and 2.) that you think about the arguments, evidence, and interpretations presented in the paper. Remember: You are required to include at least one direct quote from the readings to support your views.

  1. Guided by this week's readings, would you argue that an immigration law of a state can be create conditions for immigrant criminality to fester? Pick one example from the readings, do your own research on that law (i.e., tell us something the readings did not mention), and explain why and how that particular law creates conditions for immigrant criminality.
  2. Guided by this week's readings, would you argue that an immigration policy of the US can be create conditions for immigrant criminality to fester? Pick one example from the readings, do your own research on that policy (i.e., tell us something the readings did not mention), and explain why and how that particular policy creates conditions for immigrant criminality.
  3. Ewing (2012) frames U.S. policy as a long pattern of "opportunity and exclusion." Kubrin & Ousey (2023) describe today's harsh policies as "extensions of policies and practices enacted decades prior." Using specific laws or policies (pick one prior to year 2000 and one after year 2000) from both readings, discuss whether the contemporary enforcement regime is (1) a break from the past or  (2) the latest iteration of a familiar cycle? You can only choose one option for your reflection (either 1 or 2; do not discuss both). Be sure to discuss how and why your choice of old and new policy or law represents a break from or an iteration of the past.
