Module Aims and Curriculum
The aim of this module is that students will develop the necessary knowledge and understanding to refine and optimise their professional leadership and management capability as an HR professional which, in turn, will enhance their personal and professional development and employability within the HR profession and engagement with life-long learning. Becoming more aware of one’s own strengths and weaknesses and impact on others is of fundamental importance to an HR professional and students will be able to recognise and explain how their talents will add value to organisations and the profession and to develop confidence and agency to forge their own career direction.
Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy
This module focuses on the individual within the context of the HR profession and will help students to develop a greater sense of their place and potential within their chosen career pathway. The module has 2 distinct parts starting with an overview of the HR profession and the professional Chartered membership standards knowledge and behaviours standards and employability opportunities. Students are encouraged to conduct a self-audit of where they are against the professional membership standard on starting the module and at the end to recognise their development. Also in this first phase of the module there will be consideration of contemporary notions of leadership and the nature and concepts of leadership and management development and the process of self-awareness, development of reflexive thought and practice and personal growth.
The second part of the module will focus on the individual’s development and understanding of self in the context of the profession.
Action learning sets, along with seminars on topics such as emotional intelligence, learning preferences, values, motivation, personality, team working, leadership and management styles, cultural awareness will be supported with the use of psychometrics as well as other self-audit tools and techniques to enable participants to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP). A final experiential learning event will provide students with opportunities to interact, through group-based activities, with peers on the programme. Students will be supported in the analysis of individual and group processes and behaviours as a means of developing an understanding of self and others. Students will be encouraged to provide each other with feedback in order to identify personal competence strengths and areas for development. Attendance and participation at this event directly links to the assignment.
This module has both synchronous face to face and online learning sessions and asynchronous learning. The learning methods will include lectures, seminars, action learning, tutorials, workshops and active participant centred sessions focussed on individual and small group learning. There will be opportunities to explore ideas and concepts practically with, for example, case studies, guest speaker sessions and the experiential learning event.
