For many years children and young adult literature was considered an inferior literary form. Today that is not the case. There are scholarly journals dedicated to the subject and the number of monographs published grows steadily. A great deal of this work looks at literature targeted towards children or young adults as socially constructed so that the image of these books changes as society changes.

In this assignment, you are to find two examples of books principally targeted towards children or young adults. In a written report on these books, you are to provide a succinct synopsis of their contents and an overview of the scholarly literature on them (if you cannot find such literature after a thorough search) you can expand the scope to include the genre that the books belong too.

In the final section of the report, you will sum up the conclusions of the scholarly literature and provide a reflection on this body of work.

The final product is worth 35% of the grade and is to be between 2500 and 3000 words in length.

The evaluation of the assignment is based on the following criteria.

1. Summary of the books chosen for analysis: comprehensive (does not focus on just one part of the book),

2. clarity (information about the plot, setting and so on are expressed clearly and concisely in your own words). This section of the report should not extend beyond one paragraph of text.

3. Summary of the scholarly literature and reflection: comprehensive (does not focus on just one article or book; rather it discusses a wide range of material), evidence of thought (reflection requires thought and time devoted to thought), and imagination (goes beyond the obvious, suggests that the student is engaged with the assignment)
