Information Literacy Assignment Instructions

Micro-badges are a feature of LinkedIn, a well-known social media company focused on the business world.

According to LinkedIn, micro-badges are “digital representations of your learning outcomes, skills, or accomplishments. They are issued by credible organizations or individuals after you complete a course, a project, a certification, or a challenge. . . They can be shared on your social media profiles, online portfolios, resumes, or e-learning platforms. They can also be linked to other badges or credentials to create a pathway of learning.”

ENGL 1101 gives you the opportunity to earn an Information Literacy Micro-Badge while preparing for the

Argumentative Research Essay. Here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Go to the Information Literacy @ WGTC LibGuides page.

Step 2: Explore each of the blue information tabs in order, from left to right.

Step 3: Use your nearest WGTC campus library, GALILEO, or other Internet resource to gather peerreviewed materials on your topic for the argumentative research essay. If you’re not sure what would qualify as a peer-reviewed source, here’s a great explanation from Emory University.

Step 4: Read the materials you found and apply the CRAAP test described on the Evaluating Sources for Credibility tab. You can use the non-credit CRAAP Test Worksheet on the Evaluating Sources for Credibility tab to help focus your evaluation.

Step 5: Pick at least 4 sources you intend to use to support your thesis and main points.

Step 6: Use this link to download the Evaluate That Source Form.

Step 7: Complete one form for each source you selected.

Step 8: Upload those 4 forms to the Information Literacy Assignment Drop Box on/before the due date listed on the syllabus.

Step 9: Include these sources in the upcoming Annotated Bibliography Assignment.

Students who upload their files and score an 80 or higher on the Annotated Bibliography Assignment will receive the Information Literacy Micro-Badge, displaying your resource skills to LinkedIn’s worldwide community of peers and prospective employers!
