Job Advertisement Submission for Psychology Majors: How to Find a Posting and Write the 150–200 Word Explanation
Part A, Job activity 2: Job advertisement submission
Locate a real job advertisement requiring a bachelor’s degree in psychology or a related field. Submit:
- The full job advertisement (copy/paste)
- A link to the original posting
- A one-paragraph explanation (150–200 words) explaining why this job interests you, which qualifications you already meet and which qualifications you would need to develop
The job must clearly list the employer, responsibilities and qualifications. Responses are graded on understanding of the assignment and readings, summarizing in your own words, critical thinking and analysis, engagement and depth, grammar and APA formatting where indicated. Direct quotes and cited text from the textbook or other sources will not be accepted.
Case manager, family support specialist, mental health technician
Behavior technician (RBT), residential counselor, crisis line counselor
Research assistant, admissions counselor, HR assistant
Important: this assignment requires a real, current job advertisement that you find yourself, so this page shows how to complete it rather than giving you a posting to copy. Job ads expire quickly; save the full text and link on the day you find it.
How to complete the assignment
Step 1: Find a suitable posting
- Search job boards (Indeed, LinkedIn, Handshake), your state or county government jobs site, USAJOBS for federal roles, or the careers pages of local hospitals, school districts, behavioral health agencies and nonprofits.
- Use search terms such as “bachelor’s in psychology,” “case manager,” “behavior technician,” “mental health technician,” “family support specialist” or “research assistant psychology.”
- Choose a posting that clearly names the employer and lists both responsibilities and qualifications. Avoid recruiter ads that hide the employer.
Step 2: Copy the full ad and the link
Paste the entire ad, including the job title, employer, location, responsibilities, required and preferred qualifications and any salary information, then add the direct link. Keep a PDF or screenshot in case the posting is removed before grading.
Step 3: Analyze the qualifications
Make a quick two-column list before writing: qualifications you meet now (degree in progress, coursework, volunteer work, skills) and qualifications you still need (certifications, experience hours, licenses, specific software or a driver’s license).
Model explanation paragraph
Original example for study purposes (about 180 words). It is based on a typical case manager posting at a community behavioral health agency; your paragraph must describe the actual ad you found, in your own words.
The Case Manager position at [Employer] in [City, State] interests me because it combines the parts of psychology I enjoy most: understanding how mental health affects daily functioning and helping people connect with resources that improve their lives. The role involves assessing client needs, developing service plans, coordinating with therapists and community agencies and documenting progress, which would let me apply what I have learned about assessment, motivation and the biopsychosocial model in a practical setting. I already meet several qualifications: I will complete my bachelor’s degree in psychology in [month/year], I have strong written communication skills from my research methods course, and my two years of volunteer work at [organization] gave me experience working respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds. However, I still need to develop other qualifications. The ad prefers one year of experience in human services, familiarity with electronic health records and a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation for home visits. To close these gaps, I plan to complete a practicum at a local agency and seek training in documentation and crisis intervention.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a “related field”?
Postings often list social work, sociology, human services, counseling, criminal justice or education alongside psychology. Choose an ad that names psychology or clearly includes it in a list of acceptable degrees.
Can I use an internship posting?
Check with your instructor. The assignment asks for a job that requires a bachelor’s degree, so a paid entry-level position is usually the safest choice.
