Learning Outcomes

In this task, students will be asked to demonstrate competence in the areas below:

1. Demonstrate the ability to self-assess in relation to developing language proficiency. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the context and audience of communication in order to apply language proficiency effectively.
2. Explore language resources in order to critically assess vocabulary, as well as putting a rich and varied vocabulary into use.
3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the syntax of the language and apply this understanding by demonstrating comprehension skills across a wide range of texts in different media.
4. Demonstrate a high level of accuracy in relation to grammar, spelling, correctness and accuracy of the Irish language [Correctness of the language/flow of the language, accurate use in writing and speaking Irish, richness of language]
5. Demonstrate the ability to express opinions [A bare summary of the material is not sufficient; students will be asked to make the information their own and express opinions on the course material]

Assessment Methodology

Students will be asked to give a 5–7 minute presentation based on an Irish-language book for children that could be used in the classroom under certain headings. This task is worth 40% of the PMEP114 Professional Irish module.

Marking Scheme

Submission deadline: Wednesday, 6 January 2027 before 15:00

Presentation

Choose an Irish-language literary book for children that could be used in the classroom and critically review the use of that book in the classroom in the form of a presentation lasting 5–7 minutes.

Cover the headings below as part of the presentation:

1. Class – Name the class for whom this book would be suitable
2. Theme – Choose one theme that would be suitable for this book in the classroom
3. Integration – Discuss 2 other curriculum subjects in relation to integrating them into the classroom
4. Learning Activity – Choose one learning activity that would be useful when using this book in the classroom
5. Resources – Discuss 2 resources that would be useful to you as a teacher when using this book in the classroom. These resources can be either physical or digital resources.

Additional Guidance

Divide the marks equally as follows:

• Take particular care with grammar, spelling and the accuracy of the Irish language.
• Ensure that you have completed the appropriate sessions on MyHelms as they will help you to design a more in-depth presentation.
• Marks will be deducted for lack of accuracy.
• This task must be submitted within a single document – the lesson plan document. The Word Lesson Plan template must be used and a link to the Zoom recording must be placed at the top of the page in the appropriate box. The presentation does not need to be submitted in .pdf format. The slides will be accepted as part of the presentation, but a screenshot of the screen may be inserted into the lesson plan, if necessary.
