This SETU essay is a short, applied piece for working practitioners. It asks how Employee Assistance Programmes moved from narrow, problem-focused services to wide-ranging wellbeing support, and then how a preventative wellbeing culture could realistically be grown and communicated in the learner’s own workplace, starting with their own physical, emotional or spiritual wellbeing.
Essay Question
Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) have evolved significantly in line with organisational, psychological, behavioural, social and cultural developments in respective countries, from their more single-focused origins in the USA, to now include a range of proactive perspectives on wellbeing, i.e. personal lifespan concerns including health, marital, family, financial, alcohol, drug, legal, emotional, stress and/or other issues that may affect performance.
How might a proactive, preventative, constructive wellbeing culture be skilfully cultivated and communicated within the specific context, culture and challenge of your own work environment or organisation?
Suggested Guideline
Perhaps choose one (or a combination of) wellbeing-related area(s) of particular interest and relevance:
- PQ – Physical Intelligence: exercise, diet, sleep
- EQ – Emotional Intelligence: stress, emotions
- SQ – Spiritual Intelligence: mindfulness, meditation
Explore first how you might cultivate this in your own life, and then how, as staff support, you might cultivate wellbeing in your workplace.
