When conducting an interview, interviewers need to consider deficits of cognitive, communication and emotional/behavioral deficits. The interview should also consider neurological disorders along with substance use disorders. When conducting an interview, the two most important things to consider about all the deficits are trauma and intellectual disabilities.
Trauma is important to consider because it can significantly affect your interview. According to Fernandes et al. (2024) trauma can affect “Memory recall and organization of events, Emotional responses during interviews, Communication abilities, The interviewee’s willingness to disclose information, The risk that interviewers may misinterpret trauma-related behaviors as deception or inconsistency”. The statement regarding misinterpreting behavior as deception I have seen happen often. The behavior can cause the interviewer to steer the interview in another direction which impacts the interview and the investigation.
Knowing the signs of intellectual disabilities will help the interviewer remember to keep their questions open ended as interviewee with this disability are vulnerable to suggestibility. It is important for the interviewer to keep in mind to make their expectations clear and concise and remember the interviewee may have difficulty with memory recall (Yi, M., et al. 2025). The interviewer will want to make sure to verify the interviewees interview.
When conducting an interview, the interviewer must consider the disparities of education, socioeconomic, racial and ethnic disparities. The reason these are such important factors is these can shape a person’s behavior and their overall view or reaction to the interviewer or an authority figure. According to the American Psychological Association (APA, 2017) this factor can greatly impact the communication, trust, and the overall bias of both the interviewer and the interviewee. Without the proper building of rapport and trust the interviewer will have much more difficulty with the interviewee disclosing anything throughout the interview.
Bias and misinterpretation is very important. When growing up I was taught not to talk to law enforcement, to keep everything in house. An interviewer who would interview me would of witnessed me being evasively upset and overall not wanting to talk or stating I do not know anything. These are the same behaviors according to American Psychological Association (APA, 2017) which could be considered as deception. These are perfect examples of why the interviewer needs to be properly trained and look for these types of signs.
