This BMGT1002D Management case study asks students to pick one organisation they can get real data on, such as their current or previous employer or a company they follow, and analyse it from three angles: the general external environment, the competitive environment and the internal culture. Each tool has to be defined and evaluated from the literature before it is applied, and the work closes with at least three recommendations, one linked to each analysis.
Instructions
You must choose an organisation to which you have access in terms of the data that is required to complete the different types of analysis outlined below. This can be the company you work with, a previous company or a company you have an interest in.
A. Introduction
- A brief introduction to the chosen company from a business perspective.
- Your reason for choosing this specific company.
- A brief overview of the different sections to follow.
B. Assessment of the Business Environments
You will describe and analyse the organisation’s external context (environment) using these tools:
- the PESTEL framework
- Porter’s ‘5 Forces’ framework
You will then describe and analyse the organisation’s internal context using one of the following culture models:
- Schein’s “iceberg”
- Handy’s Competing Values framework
- Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions
PESTEL Framework: General Environment
Using descriptions and diagrams, present the outcome of a PESTEL analysis of your organisational context. Refer to the literature for definitions of the components and the approach to analysis.
Porter’s ‘5 Forces’ Framework: Competitive Environment
Using descriptions and diagrams, present the outcome of a five forces analysis of your organisational context. Refer to the literature for the definition of the framework and the approach to analysis.
Culture Analysis
Using descriptions and diagrams/images, describe and analyse the culture of your chosen organisation. Refer to the literature for the definition of relevant frameworks and the approach to analysis.
You must briefly define, explain and evaluate the tools you are using prior to their application. Sources for this section must extend beyond the core text to the original conceptual material and research on the topic. Internet sources alone are not sufficient; refer to journal articles and non-textbooks for further detail on the conceptual frameworks. For context data on the organisation, consult public data sources and the databases available through the UCD Library, in addition to insider information and data obtained through personal contacts.
C. Recommendations
As part of the conclusion to your essay/video/presentation/podcast, make at least three recommendations: one recommendation based on each of the assessments undertaken. Clearly identify the issue with reference to the tool that highlighted it and offer a concrete recommendation on how the issue could be addressed to the benefit of the organisation.
